Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU)
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established in 1985
with the aim to provide cost-effective, quality education to large
sections of population in
India
including those
living in remote and far flung areas. Since its inception IGNOU has carved
a niche for itself among the premier educational institutions in the
country. The University has been a pioneer in Distance Education and the
recipient of the Centre of Excellence in Distance Education award
conferred by the
Commonwealth of Learning
in 1993. As an Open University, IGNOU has come a
long way since 1985, having crossed national boundaries providing higher
education as well as assisting other developing countries in this regard.
IGNOU
has two main functions:
1.
It
offers various academic programmes that lead to Certificates, Diplomas
and Degrees. It develops and produces courses for delivery through
open learning and distance education mode. IGNOU is also actively
involved in research, training and extension education activities.
2.
In
its capacity as an Apex Body, it co-ordinates and monitors distance
education system throughout the country. IGNOU has also constituted
the Distance Education Council and has provided expertise and
assistance to other Open and Distance Learning Institutions in the
country.
The University has emerged as the largest Open University in the world catering
to the educational aspirations of more than 1.8 million learners.
At present the
141 programmes at different levels are on offer through 21 schools of studies. The University has established a network
of 58 regional centres, more that 1800 study centres/ tele-learning centres all over the country and 46 overseas centres to provide easy access and effective support
services to learners.
The University provides multi-channel, multiple media teaching- learning packages
in the form of self-instructional print and audio/video materials, radio and television
broadcasts, face-to-face counseling/ tutoring, laboratory and hands on experience,
video conferencing, interactive radio counseling, interactive multimedia CD ROM
and internet based learning.
